Holloman AFB
Holloman AFB, New Mexico was originally established in 1942 as Alamogordo Air Field. Located six miles west of Alamogordo, initial construction began at the airfield on 6th February 1942. In 1948 the base was re-named after Colonel George Holloman, a pioneer in early rocket and pilotless aircraft research. On 9th May 1992 the world's first operational low observable (stealth) aircraft, the F-117A Nighthawk, arrived at the base. It is incredible to think that in December 2006 ten of these remarkable aircraft were retired. By the end of 2008 the entire F-117A fleet will have been replaced by the latest stealth aircraft in the USAF inventory, the F-22 Raptor.
Addition aircraft flown at Holloman AFB are T-38
Talons, QF-4 Phantom drones and a detachment of German Air Force
Tornados.
Thanks to Ian Allan's Aviation Photo Club, our guides Blair Ponder and Robert Sexton and all at Holloman AFB that made this trip possible.
